Star Wars Fans ‘Despise’ One Weapon Used By A Villainous Group

While Star Wars weapons are usually a source of fun and excitement, one fan on social media has called out the franchise for a strange weapon choice for one villainous group stemming from its otherwise well-received animated properties.

Star Wars Inquisitors have likely had more of an impact on fans than any other group of characters introduced, as their quest to hunt down and eliminate survivors of Order 66 for Darth Vader and Sidious brings them into conflict with fan-favorite characters repeatedly. While some fans initially questioned who the Inquisitors were, they very quickly became a solid addition to both the animated Star Wars: Rebels, Star Wars: Jedi game franchise, and even the live-action shows Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Star Wars: Ahsoka.

Despite this quick ascension to relevance, many fans still wondered why the Inquisitor’s lightsabers were so different from the forms seen in previous Star Wars media, as each Inquisitor wielded a dual-bladed saber with a round hilt that spun around the guard, marking a significant change that was probably not for the better. While many were content to ignore it, Reddit user APerson2021 went a step further and aired their grievances. Taking to r/StarWars to put up a post titled, “In my opinion (which you do not have to agree with) the spinning lightsabres that The Inquisitors use are ridiculous,” the user would state bluntly, “I despise everything about the spinning lightsabers -I don’t know even know where to begin with them.” Specifying the worst part about these special weapons, APerson2021 would highlight the incident in Star Wars: Rebels where Inquisitors were shown using these spinning lightsabers as propellers to escape danger helicopter style.

While the user ends the post by expressing that they don’t mind dissent and encouraging others to explain why, most responses seem to agree with the sentiment, with some even clowning the OP for expressing such a “controversial” opinion. Several respondents admitted that while they were okay with the design initially as it was “cool” in concept, the idea fell apart when they showed up, and not a single person could look past the silliness of the helicopter scene. Furthermore, some users pointed out that the design was meant to be more intimidating than practical, which is part of why none of the Inquisitors come up when Star Wars‘ best lightsaber duels are discussed. Against a skilled opponent, these weapons look even more silly than they already do.

Lightsabers are iconic onscreen and in the expanded lore of the franchise, so each one that appears in the franchise is scrutinized down to the tiniest detail, often to much fan enjoyment and a deeper understanding of the user. The Inquisitors bring something different and far less interesting, as their weapons are more identical to one another than those of the Clone Troopers seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where characters with the same face show their unique personalities in part by their weapons and armor. The Inquisitors’ factory-style sabers tell fans a lot about how they aren’t true Sith and aren’t valued as individuals by their masters, Darth Vader and Sidious. However, their unwillingness to customize or tinker drops the ball on enhancing character. The helicopter thing is also indefensible, as the lightsaber “blade” isn’t a solid blade and wouldn’t make a convincing rotor even if it was.

Despite the issue with their weapons, the group is still quite popular, with fan-favorite Star Wars Rebels character Kanan Jarrus becoming an Inquisitor in fan art. While it’s unknown how much more they’ll appear going forward after the appearance of ex-member Marrok in Star Wars: Ahsoka, there’s still at least some chance that the Inquisitors will appear in future projects.
