  • Despite worries about The Sims 5 leaks, The Sims 4 is still receiving support and will likely run alongside the new game.

The Sims 4 just made another reference to Final Fantasy 14 in its newest DLC pack, Crystal Creations. This cheeky nod to Final Fantasy 14 proves that some of the developers of The Sims 4 are fans of the critically acclaimed MMORPG.

On February 29, The Sims 4 released Crystal Creations, its most recent DLC pack focused on gemstones and jewelry. Players can discover and charge crystals with energy that affect the lives and moods of their Sims, and they can use the new Gemology skill in The Sims 4 to make magnificent new necklaces and other accessories to customize their characters.

Why Project Rene May ‘Kill’ The Sims 4

With all the features that Project Rene promises to bring, the idea of it living in tandem with the dated Sims 4 seems unlikely.

Like most of The Sims 4 DLC, Crystal Creations is also full of new decorations, but one in particular has a charming reference to Final Fantasy 14. A new item in the DLC package called the Spire-Shaped Gemstone has flavor text that describes it as “your very own mini crystal tower that an exarch would be proud of.” Fans of FF14 would immediately recognize this as a reference to the Crystal Tower, a prominent landmark in Final Fantasy 14 that is itself a reference to FF3, as well as the Crystal Exarch, the tower’s keeper. This particular gem was discovered by The Sims 4 fan Rheill and subsequently shared on their personal Twitter.

New The Sims 4 DLC References FF14’s Crystal Tower

The Crystal Tower is an incredibly important location in Final Fantasy 14. It is the setting of the first 24-man raid series from A Realm Reborn, and it plays a prominent role in Shadowbringers as well. The Crystal Exarch, who also appears in Shadowbringers, is integral to the plot of the expansion and has gone on to be one of the most popular characters in Final Fantasy 14.

This isn’t the first time The Sims 4 has given a nod to Final Fantasy 14. In 2022, Game producer SimGuruNova added two items in The Sims 4’s Werewolves DLC that referenced FF14: Shadowbringers, and she has snuck in other items that did the same with Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, and other popular games as well. It is unclear if SimGuruNova was responsible for this new reference, but it would not be a surprise if she was.

While Crystal Creations has been a hit with fans, some players have worries over recent The Sims 5 leaks, which hint at a more cartoony art style to fit its mobile platforms. Luckily, it seems like The Sims 4 is still getting plenty of support, and is expected to run concurrently with its mobile successor. Fans interested in getting a crystal tower of their own can pick up The Sims 4 Crystal Creations for $10.
