Warning: Spoilers for World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery Phase 2 below.
Season of Discovery is a Classic World of Warcraft server that introduces some new twists to the game world. Described by its developers as expanding upon “found photos” of old pieces of lore, Season of Discovery has some fascinating gems hidden within it, such as the appearance of a shadowy figure in Phase 1 who was almost certainly Xal’atath, the antagonist of retail World of Warcraft’s next expansion.
World of Warcraft Narrative Director Quietly Left Blizzard Last Year
After months of fan speculation, former World of Warcraft narrative director Steve Danuser confirms that he left Blizzard late last year.
Now that Phase 2 is underway, World of Warcraft fans have discovered a Night Elf NPC named Illari Duskfeather. As reported by WoW player and lore enthusiast Portergauge, Illari is encountered at the end of a quest chain for each class to obtain one of the new Runes from World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery Phase 2. After discovering murdered Alliance agents, fans must follow a breadcrumb trail until they discover Illari, who is the mastermind behind the killings. Dissatisfied with the Night Elves being a part of the Alliance, the extremist must be confronted and stopped by players of both factions – though Night Elf characters have an opportunity to convince Illari to stand down, and can obtain her key without killing her.

The Night Elves were independent during Warcraft 3, but they officially joined the Alliance in World of Warcraft. That said, Illari Duskfeather’s existence implies there is a group of Night Elf separatists who dislike the Alliance as much as the Horde. While this small faction is unlikely to appear in the spotlight in Retail, they are a fascinating addition to the story of the Night Elves in World of Warcraft as a whole.
Illari Duskfeather is far from the only secret hidden in Season of Discovery. Boarton Shadetotem, a Tauren Rogue NPC added in Dragonflight when the race/class combo was unlocked, appears in Classic Thunder Bluff with a special quest from SoD Phase 1. Shadetotem claims to be from the future, when Tauren Rogues are playable, and provides a fun quest where Shamans can learn the ability to dual wield and unlock the Lava Lash Rune.
Season of Discovery is full of mysteries, and each phase of the servers will be adding even more to find. Whether they delve into the depths of the 10-man Gnomeregan raid, or brave Stranglethorn Vale in WoW Classic SoD’s Blood Moon PvP event, players should keep their eyes peeled for more hidden secrets and lore Easter eggs.
