Xbox Game Pass has added Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, a new day-one title from Capcom, to its content library. This is the 11th game to reach Microsoft’s subscription service in July 2024, and the 95th Xbox Game Pass release since the turn of the year.

Capcom originally announced Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess in June 2023, having immediately labeled it as a day-one addition to the XGP library. Its title literally translates to “great deity of the Earth” or “great god of the land,” which is a reflection of its Japanese folklore inspirations. The game itself is a unique genre hybrid that features hack-and-slash action, strategy, and tower defense mechanics.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess Is Getting Excellent Reviews

The game itself has received a lot of positive pre-release buzz, with many reviewers praising Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess for its varied gameplay, memorable boss fights, and an intuitive control scheme. Its average score on OpenCritic currently sits at 81, based on nearly 50 ratings. The game also boasts a whopping 85% reviewer recommendation rate on the aggregator platform.

While not exactly the most graphically intensive title ever made, this unique genre hybrid is elevated by its strong art direction, which heavily leans into traditional Japanese painting styles from the Edo period. Admiring its vivid palette and brushwork is made all the easier with the Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess photo mode, which offers a robust set of options conducive to creativity. Capcom fans should feel right at home with this feature, as its interface and capabilities are fairly similar to the photo modes of the company’s other recent games, such as Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Resident Evil 4 remake. That’s ostensibly because all of the above are powered by the studio’s proprietary RE Engine.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is the eighth day-one title to reach Xbox Game Pass since the turn of the month. It’s also the final previously announced July 2024 addition to Microsoft’s subscription service, whose next confirmed game is Creatures of Ava, which is scheduled to arrive on August 7. However, there have been some industry rumblings about Xbox Game Pass adding two more surprise titles in the final stretch of July, one of which is said to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
