Baldur’s Gate 3 is an impressive dive into the Dungeons and Dragons franchise by Larian Studios. The game follows a group of misfits as they make their way across the Sword Coast, working together to save the future of Baldur’s Gate.
After completing the game, many players go on to try their hand at Honour Mode, which is an entirely different version of the game. Here’s a list of the best party compositions for anyone wanting to venture into Faerun’s most difficult challenge.
These party compositions will have the characters as their regular Class unless stated otherwise. Remember, if players prefer different characters, they can always
just change the Classes
around to create their perfect party.

Baldur’s Gate 3: All Permanent Bonuses (& How To Get Them)
BG3 is full of permanent bonuses players can obtain. Here’s a guide to finding them all.
5 The Melee Damage Group – Deals Melee Damage
Shadowheart, Minthara, Astarion, and a Monk
- Healer: Shadowheart (Life Domain)
- DPS: Astarion (Thief) and Monk (Way of the Open Hand)
- Tank: Minthara (Oath of Devotion)
One group that is a pretty decent option for a decent number of scenarios in the game is this melee group. It focuses on melee damage (for the most part), meaning that there isn’t anyone who is completely dedicated to range or AoE damage. Instead, the tank and healer will focus on keeping everyone alive while the DPS are able to truly focus on the battle and deal as much damage as they can all at once, which is what Monks and Rogues do best.
Shadowheart is going to be the healer (almost all Honour Mode runs will need a healer), and with her specific character, she can also tank a small amount if that is absolutely needed. Minthara will be able to tank most of the enemies due to her high defense. She can also heal herself some when Shadowheart is in a bind. Astarion is going to focus on dealing with sneak attack damage, and he can also use a bow every once in a while. Finally, the Monk (either Tav or anyone that the player wants to reroll as a Monk if they are playing as an Origin Character) will be dealing the most amount of damage.
4 The Ranged Damage Party – A Good Mixture Of Classes
Shadowheart, Wyll, Karlach, and a Ranger
- Healer: Shadowheart (Life Domain)
- DPS: Wyll (The Fiend) and Ranger (Beastmaster)
- Tank: Karlach (Berserker)
The ranged damage party will mainly focus on ranged damage, meaning Wyll and the Ranger will be the two who are doing the most damage. Shadowheart will focus mainly on Karlach but can switch to DPS if needed. While Karlach is working at the tank, she will also be doing massive amounts of damage to single targets, meaning that she can still be a DPS as well. Players will just want to make sure that the ranged DPS characters aren’t being hit head-on.

Baldur’s Gate 3: 8 Best Honour Mode Builds
Honour mode in Baldur’s Gate 3 makes gameplay extremely unforgiving. Here are the strongest builds to help players push through until the end.
Shadowheart will be the party’s main healer, but like always, she can step into battle if she needs to focus on enemies rather than healing her allies. Karlach can focus on singular targets or focus on grabbing the attention of all targets, whichever is needed from her. With Wyll, he will be able to deal ranged AoE damage, allowing him to deal a good amount of damage to multiple enemies. Finally, the Ranger (which can be Tav or Minsc, depending on whom the player is playing as) will deal with ranged damage and have a beast that can deal damage as well. With this party, the animal should probably be a DPS animal.
3 The Stereotypical RPG Group – Versatile
Shadowheart, Gale/Wyll, Astarion, and a Paladin or Fighter
- Healer: Shadowheart (Life Domain)
- Damage: Wyll (The Fiend) or Gale (School of Evocation), Astarion (Thief)
- Tank: Tav as a Paladin (Oath of Devotion) or Fighter (Battle Master)
Most of the time, players will have a very stereotypical party when they play RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3. This means that there needs to be someone who can heal, someone who can tank, and a good mixture of damage types (so ranged and close combat, AoE and single-target, etc.). This is the type of party that is used a ton in RPGs and is probably the most versatile for any situation that they may end up in.
With this group, Shadowheart will need to be a Life Domain Cleric (here are some of the best healing spells) so she can heal the party (which is definitely needed in Honour Mode). Having Wyll or Gale will not only add range DPS to the party, but also AoE. Finally, Astarion will be the one that does stealth attacks and can be used to lockpick and steal. If Tav plays as a Paladin or Fighter, they will be able to tank whatever the group needs. If the player is playing as an Origin Character, Lae’zel or Karlach would be perfect for this role.
2 The High Defense Party – Hard To Kill
Shadowheart, Lae’zel, Karlach, and a Paladin
- Healer: Shadowheart (Life Domain)
- Tank/DPS: Lae’zel (Battle Master), Karlach (Berserker), and the Paladin (Oath of Devotion)
This is a party that is focused on having a high defense and dealing lots of damage, meaning they will be able to shred through most foes that are thrown at them. The only downside to this group is that they will focus more on singular targets and close combat rather than ranged or AoE. However, they will still be able to do some real damage; just be careful that they don’t die during the Honour Run, or the party may have to start completely over (or switch to a regular campaign).

Baldur’s Gate 3: 7 Things To Do To Make Honour Mode Harder
Honour Mode has arrived to Baldur’s Gate 3, bringing in a host of new challenges. Here are the best ways to make it an even tougher trial.
Shadowheart, like most of the time, will be the party’s healer. However, if she is needed as a DPS for some reason, she can be built to have some DPS capabilities, making her versatile. Then, Lae’zel and Karlach will be able to tank most enemies, so long as they aren’t overrun. They will both focus on handling singular targets at a time. Finally, the Paladin (if the player is playing as an Origin Character, Minthara is the perfect Paladin) will be a lot like Lae’zel and Karlach, but they will be able to heal themselves at times.
1 An Unstoppable Damage Party – Maximize Damage
Shadowheart, Lae’zel, Wyll (as a Sorcerer), and Another Sorcerer
- Healer: Shadowheart (Life Domain)
- DPS: Wyll (Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer) and the other Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline)
- Tank: Lae’zel (Battle Master)
This party composition looks at having a party that is capable of dealing massive amounts of damage to enemies. It consists of a tank, a healer, and then two ranged AoE attackers, which are the Sorcerers. While this is a great combination, it is important to remember that the Sorcerers can have lower defense, so there is the chance that they will be killed easily if the tank doesn’t ensure the enemies are focused on them. The healer will also want to focus on the tank, so they will need to stay out of direct combat.
For this party, Shadowheart will be the healer, ensuring that the tank stays alive. Lae’zel will work as the tank and will be able to deal some great amount of damage since she still has a high DPS despite having a high defense. Finally, Wyll and the player will be Sorcerers, dealing massive amounts of AoE damage to enemies. If the player is an Origin Character, Gale can make a great Sorcerer. There is also the option to sub in one Sorcerer for a Wizard (Gale), but the Sorcerer Class is slightly better for DPS and AoE than Wizards are.
