Sony launched the new era of PlayStation Plus in June 2022, combining the previous version with PS Now. Although the latter subscription service was around for a long time, PS Now struggled to get over its early negative reputation, so a revamp was needed to wipe the slate clean.

PS Plus is split into three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Essential unlocks PlayStation’s online features along with providing a couple of free monthly games. Along with Essential’s offerings, Extra grants access to hundreds of PS5 and PS4 games; meanwhile, Premium extends the lineup to include older consoles. Each month, Sony adds a bunch of new PS Plus games to each tier, including first-party exclusives, third-party juggernauts, and indie darlings. Free Games On PS Plus Essential: March 2024

So far in 2024, PS Plus Essential has delivered respectable lineups of games, and March’s selection is certainly not an exception. This time around, subscribers can add four titles to their libraries, although one project was previously available to Extra and Premium members. One of Bungie’s most highly-rated expansions, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen takes the core game’s rock-solid gameplay and enhances it with an engaging story with far-reaching consequences. Even though these releases are hard sells to complete newcomers who have never stepped into the shoes of guardians, The Witch Queen can be enjoyed without playing the other expansions. That said, players will need to download the free base content.

Since most people interested in The Witch Queen have likely already tried it, these players will be more curious about March 2024’s other free PS Plus games. Sifu is a fantastic beat ’em up roguelite with satisfying combat that comes with a steep learning curve. Far from a pick-up-and-play package, this indie release demands and rewards commitment from players. The main hook is that death causes the protagonist to age by a few years when they revive. While they get stronger along the way, they can only resurrect so many times before the Grim Reaper permanently takes them. The game has an impressive selection of learnable moves, although they are lost between runs if players do not unlock them for good.

F1 23 is a racing sim from one of the genre’s most decorated developers, Codemasters. As the 2024 version of this project is on the horizon, this giveaway should give players a taste of what is to come, allowing them to decide if they want to invest in the newest offering. Lastly, Hello Neighbor 2 is a stealth/puzzle/adventure game that tends to split players right down the middle.

Formerly known as just PS Plus, Essential is the minimum required to play online multiplayer on the PS5 or PS4. Every month, the tier rotates a couple of new free PS Plus games. PS Plus Extra is the first tier that includes a catalog featuring hundreds of games. Extra focuses exclusively on PS5 and PS4 titles, with each month expanding the existing library with roughly 10 to 20 new additions. Unlike Essential, PS Plus Extra’s games are available indefinitely, although some could be removed after spending a few months on the service. Since the service’s launch, this tier’s monthly lineup has gradually started to include more PS5 releases.

March 2024 features a strong PS Plus Extra lineup that largely consists of well-known games. NBA 2K24 is simultaneously an acquired taste and extremely popular. Although annual sports titles have fixed communities who pick up every entry on release, they tend to be decent PS Plus options since there are always people who are happy to give them a spin but struggle to justify investing direct cash in them. The same can be said for something like Lego DC Supervillains, a charming open-world project perfect for kids and adults alike. As the game adheres closely to the standard Lego formula, the gameplay loop could get old quickly if somebody has recently played another entry in the franchise.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a big get for PS Plus Extra, and an easy recommendation for anyone remotely interested in either comics, tactical RPGs, or deck-builders. Blood Bowl 3 is also a viable strategy title. Horror fans can check out Resident Evil 3, especially if they recently played through its predecessor via PS Plus Extra. While not quite hitting the same highs as Resident Evil 2, the 2020 release is still great in its own right.

PS Plus Premium includes everything available on Sony’s service. Along with Essential and Extra’s games and benefits, this tier includes a classic catalog of PS3, PS2, PS1, and PSP games, along with some PS4 remasters. Premium’s monthly additions have been inconsistent so far, and it is not unusual for a month to go by with barely any classic additions to the tier.

Although most lineups contain only a handful of classics, PS Plus Premium has been steadily enhancing its old-school library, particularly when it comes to PSP and PS1 releases. The games might not all be bona fide masterpieces, but the selection covers both well-known and obscure properties.
