DC Comics has a long history of creating incredible characters that interact in a unique and fantastical world. From the classic characters like Batman and Wonder Woman to the more recent fan-favorite additions, the world of DC Comics is constantly expanding and changing.

However, romance is one thing that is rarely permanent in the comics. It is difficult to create conflict and a story out of eternal happiness, and so most couples, even the most famous ones, have at least had separations over the years. Nevertheless, some DC couples have created wonderful stories and been shown over and over to be perfect fits for each other, particularly the very top most among the memorable pairings over the years.

8 Mister Miracle & Big Barda

First Meeting: Mister Miracle #4 (1971)

• Relationship Status: Married With Kids

One of the most beloved relationships in DC Comics is this pair who met on Apokolips. Big Barda was a native, while Mister Miracle was the adopted son of Darkseid. When they met, they fell in love, and Barda helped him escape to Earth and then followed him there because of their love.

This duo has been married, had children, and most importantly been together over the vast majority of their comic book history, which is a claim that even most major comic book couples can’t make. Despite their lack of appearances in other media, this incredible love story of overcoming odds and not being defined by where one came from, as Big Barda realized the truth about Darkseid’s horrific dictatorship and by stepping away from it for love, made an impact with fans.

7 Batman & Catwoman

First Meeting: Batman #1 (1940)

• Relationship Status: It’s Complicated (Married At A Time)

One of the more tumultuous but notable and memorable relationships that has developed throughout DC Comics history, these two first met in the very first issue of the Batman comic book in 1940, when Catwoman was introduced as the villainous Cat. Since then, her character has developed, like that of many Batman villains, into an anti-hero, she’s had comic book titles of her own, and the sultry relationship teased for years with Batman came to fruition.

Documented to various degrees in other media, including The Dark Knight Rises and most recently in The Batman (2022), this pair have struggled in their dark world to trust each other. However, they eventually managed it and got married in the twelfth issue of their own team-up comic book series. Shockingly, their wedding itself was fairly adorable, done in Vegas style by a man dressed as Batman, with last-minute witnesses Superman and Lois Lane arriving before Bruce could even finish asking over the phone.

6 Aquaman & Mera

First Meeting: Aquaman #11 (1963)

• Relationship Status: Married Across The Multiverse

Another couple that met a long time ago, Aquaman and Mera began life in a confused fashion. Mera was a native of Dimension Aqua. When she came to Earth, she met both Aquaman and Aqualad, and they vowed to help her. Their long relationship has included multiple marriages in different continuities.

To boot, the pair have even had children, primarily Arthur Curry Jr, known briefly as Aqualad, who was killed while still a child by Black Manta. This duo has almost always been together, with Aquaman having very few other romantic interactions with characters throughout his comic book history. Even when Aquaman did have an affair in an Elseworld Flashpoint story, it caused World War 3, so it’s best that Mera and Aquaman stay coupled up.

5 Black Canary & Green Arrow

First Meeting: Justice League Of America #21 (1963)

• Relationship Status: Married Then Divorced, Then Rebooted

This duo has a long history. Their first encounter was in the pages of the original Justice League Of America series, but Black Canary was a member of the Justice Society of Earth-2. They had a fight when these two groups faced off, but shortly after, Canary’s husband was killed trying to save her, and she moved to Earth-1 to join the Justice League.

This move, followed by a great series of comics where these two journeyed across America, fighting crime and getting to know the people as well as each other, led to fans falling in love with them. They’ve always nearly been linked in some way since then, except when Arrow was dead for a time, and they finally tied the knot in 2007 in a grand spectacular. Unfortunately, several DC Comics Universe reboots led to their separation, but they recently found romance again in the Rebirth Green Arrow series, which could help lead to more adaptions of this couple.

4 Nightwing & Batgirl

First Meeting: Detective Comics #359 (1967)

• Relationship Status: Soulmates

One of the most surprisingly healthy relationships between heroes in the DC Universe has always been Nightwing & Batgirl. These two met when Batgirl was first introduced, and Dick Grayson was still holding the title of Robin. Batman’s ward and newest ally were both young, in a world where they were forced to age quickly, and they matured in their romantic connection, which was always present, quickly for their age.

While the pair have sometimes been split up and put romantic connections aside, they have never fought or had a bad break-up. They always keep things civil, are at the very least close friends, and generally have one of the most pleasant and happy relationships that a pair of superheroes have ever been shown to have, and it could easily be brought to the DC Universe.

3 Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy

First Meeting: Batman: The Animated Series: Season 1, Episode 47 (Harley and Ivy)

• Relationship Status: Girlfriends That Are Still Working It Out

It’s crazy to see how far Harley Quinn has come as a character, after being introduced only thirty years ago and in an animated show. Quickly becoming a fan favorite in comics and gaining herself an animated show, major live-action film appearances, and top spots in video games, Harley was always going to have her fascinating romantic connections after moving on from the Joker, but fans didn’t necessarily expect her to move on to another Batman villain.

Poison Ivy is a strange character who has never gained much focus, but her recent relationship with Harley Quinn, both in Harley’s animated show and in DC Comics, has been one of the most beloved by fans in recent years. These two have redefined comic book love and proven that not just heroes can have wonderfully enjoyable and fresh romances. Ivy and Harley are complicated, and sometimes their misdeeds interfere with their love, but they are an inseparable duo nonetheless.

2 Wally West & Linda Park

First Meeting: The Flash #28 (1989)

• Relationship Status: Married With Kids

The second Flash, Wally West, had a rocky start when he met his future wife and the mother of his children. Wally was initially a cocky, abrasive character when he took over the mantle from his uncle, Barry Allen. When he first met reporter Linda Park, she thoroughly disliked him, but they thawed out to each other over time.

Considered by many fans the best unknown relationship in DC Comics, due to the lack of representation it has had in any major media adaptions. But this pair has had a wonderful, beautiful, and consistent relationship, several children, and is beloved by almost all DC fans.

1 Superman & Lois Lane

First Meeting: Action Comics #1 (1938)

• Relationship Status: The Perfect Couple

The headliners, as far as relationships in comic books go, are Superman and Lois Lane. Lois has been around in Superman comics since the very beginning. The pair have spent the vast majority of the last 85 years married and have had multiple television shows that include both of their names on the title.

Lois has been a rock for Superman. Her importance in his comics has always been massive, helping showcase the human side of the man that is more powerful than any other DC hero. Keeping fans interested in Superman’s adventures has always been a task due to his strength and purity of character, and his connection with Lois has been a vital aspect of it.
