The upcoming Horizon MMORPG could be skipping PS5 entirely, since a developer job listing cites that the game is in development for PC and mobile platforms only. This new Horizon game is expected to be released in 2025 at the earliest after nearly four years of development.

Horizon: Zero Dawn marked the beginning of a successful action-adventure series for Sony and developer Guerrilla Games. The first game in the Horizon series would go on to sell over 24 million copies worldwide on PlayStation and PC platforms. Horizon Forbidden West, the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, surpassed 8 million copies sold in April 2023, just over one year after its launch in February 2022. Reports of a new Horizon MMORPG also began to surface, as Sony expanded its efforts in live-service gaming. In 2023, Guerrilla Games brought in new hires to work on the next Horizon game starring series protagonist Aloy.

PlayStation is meant to be making a big push into live-service, but things haven’t gone too well, making fans worry about Horizon’s multiplayer game,

Video games researcher Kurakasis recently compiled job listings and information regarding the new Horizon MMORPG, which appears to be in development as “Project Skyline” at South Korea-based studio and Sony partner NCSoft. According to a Project Skyline job listing, the new open-world Horizon game is currently in development with Unreal Engine 5 for PC and mobile platforms. The new Horizon game could be skipping PS5, as Kurakasis suggests that a PS5 version is not planned in the current stage of development. However, it’s still possible for a PS5 version or next-gen PlayStation version to be released in the future.

According to Kurakasis, LinkedIn and Facebook posts from former NCSoft employees in South Korea suggest that Project Skyline began in 2021, which is one year prior to the reports of the new Horizon MMORPG being in development. At the time, the new project went under the initial codename “Project H.” The future Horizon title will launch “significantly after” NCSOFT’s mobile MMORPG Aion 2, which is currently planned for release in 2024 or 2025. As a result, Kurakasis assumes that the game will most likely launch in 2025 or later for PC and mobile.

The job listing for the new Horizon game is a promising sign for those who supported Horizon Zero Dawn on PC. Although the MMORPG is being developed with PC and mobile technologies in mind, a PS5 port is still possible with backing from Guerrilla Games and Sony. The Horizon series has a dedicated player base on PlayStation platforms, so Sony may want to reassure fans that a PlayStation version will be released once more information about the new title is available.
