Jujutsu Kaisen has seen the rise and fall of countless powerful sorcerers over the years. While some of them have been geniuses right from the get-go, others have been late bloomers. In both cases, sorcerers have, on very rare occasions, undergone an astonishing change. This change eventually led them to an entirely different level of power, and understanding of their own potential.

When a sorcerer’s potential is completely unlocked, they truly manage to awaken. So far, only a handful of sorcerers have managed to get an awakening in Jujutsu Kaisen, but those who have managed to gain this power have fulfilled their potential completely.

5 Mahito

A Powerful Curse Born From Hatred

• Awakening Achieved In: Shibuya Arc
• Awakened Against: Yuji And Todo

Mahito assumed the role of the primary antagonist in the first few arcs of Jujutsu Kaisen. In the Shibuya Incident Arc, he was the main antagonist, and there, he wreaked all sorts of havoc. Mahito was eventually taken on by the duo of Yuji Itadori and Todo, and together, these two managed to put an end to him.

However, before Mahito died, he managed to get a proper Awakening. After receiving a Black Flash from Yuji, Mahito finally understood his potential and brought out his true form. This form of Mahito was so powerful that had he been allowed to continue, he could eventually have reached the same level as the likes of Gojo and Sukuna. He was way too dangerous in this state. However, thankfully, he was defeated by Yuji, due to his ability to directly deal damage to his soul. Of course, he was eventually consumed by none other than Kenjaku.

4 Hiromi Higuruma

An Attorney Turned Sorcerer

• Awakening Achieved In: Shinjuku Showdown Arc
• Awakened Against: Sukuna

Hiromi Higuruma is an attorney turned sorcerer and fans saw quite a great deal of him in the Culling Game arc. He also played an active role in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, especially after the fight between Gojo and Sukuna. Hiromi Higuruma jumped into battle immediately after, and it was there that he underwent an Awakening.

He was already very gifted, however, when forced by Sukuna to evolve in the midst of battle, he did not disappoint. Higuruma managed to learn reverse cursed technique fully, and at the same time, he even managed to learn how to use Domain Amplification. In fact, his awakening was so incredible that he was labeled as the next Gojo and that means his full potential was now unlocked. If he’s still alive, he will go on to become a sorcerer on the same level as Gojo later down the line.

3 Maki Zenin

A Sorcerer Without Cursed Energy

• Awakened Against: Naoya Zenin

Maki Zenin was born with a Heavenly Restriction, and that meant she had little cursed energy but incredible physicality. Maki underwent an Awakening after the conclusion of Shibuya. When his sister sacrificed herself, Maki’s true potential was unlocked. Maki then went to fulfill her potential in the Culling Game arc, especially when she came face to face with Naoya.

After his defeat, the author stated that a demon on the same level as Toji Fushiguro was born. This meant that Maki fulfilled her potential. At the same time, she surpassed Toji later down the line as she strengthened herself even further during the timeskip of the series.

2 Gojo Satoru

The Strongest Modern Sorcerer

• Awakening Achieved In: Hidden Inventory Arc
• Awakened Against: Toji Fushiguro

Gojo Sotoru was born with both the Six Eyes as well as the Limitless technique of the Gojo Clan. This meant that he was blessed with tools that would make him the strongest sorcerer of his generation. Gojo managed to fulfill his potential during his fight against Toji Fushiguro, after he was close to death. Once Gojo recovered from this, he had mastered reverse cursed technique, which gave him access to Cursed Technique Reversal: Red.

Of course, the Secret Technique: Hollow Purple was also accessible to him. Even Toji stood absolutely no chance against him once he had mastered these elements of his cursed technique, and, from there onwards, he strengthened himself further to a point where he became equal to the likes of Sukuna.

1 Yuji Itadori

A Sorcerer With Potential Equal To Sukuna

Yuji Itadori is the protagonist of JJK, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise to the fans that Yuji underwent an awakening as well. Fans were eagerly waiting for this to happen, and finally, the author delivered in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc.

After hitting a black flash against Sukuna, Yuji finally unlocked his true potential, and now, he will be able to bring out his 100%, reaching an entirely new level of strength as well. Due to his awakening, he gained the power to utilize the Shrine cursed technique.
