Developer Leikir Studio has announced that Metal Slug Tactics, the latest strategy RPG game in the series, is scheduled to launch in fall 2024. This new installment in the Metal Slug series will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

Metal Slug is a series of run-and-gun video games renowned for its fast-paced action, vibrant pixel art, and challenging gameplay. Developed by SNK, the series debuted in 1996 and quickly gained a dedicated fanbase. Players take control of various characters, often soldiers, as they battle through hordes of enemies, tanks, and colossal bosses across diverse, beautifully detailed environments. Known for its signature humor, frantic gameplay, and memorable characters, Metal Slug has left an indelible mark on the gaming world. In 2021, Metal Slug Tactics was announced, and now it finally has a release window.

A recently released Metal Slug Tactics trailer showcases the intense, colorful, and action-packed scenes that players can expect in fall 2024, featuring popular characters from the series in a new tactical, grid-based gameplay setting. The game promises to blend the explosive charm and nostalgic fun of the classic Metal Slug series with modern strategic elements. The trailer highlights the game’s fast-paced action, complete with explosive effects, detailed animations, and a variety of enemy types. Additionally, a demo will be available for a limited time on PC via Steam from June 10 to 17 during Steam Next Fest.

According to the game’s Steam page, Metal Slug Tactics will merge arcade action with roguelike tactical thrills, providing a twist on the traditional Metal Slug shmups formula. Players will dive into intense combat zones, engaging in strategic battles and unleashing powerful special attacks. As players lead their squad to victory, they will accumulate experience to unlock new weapons and perks, enhancing their team’s firepower and tactical skills. Strategic gameplay elements include determining the best weapon loadouts and mods, launching simultaneous attacks using the “SYNC” mechanic, and calling in reinforcements like heavy artillery and airstrikes. Additionally, the campaign will take players through hand-crafted maps, presenting numerous challenges and opportunities to learn and adapt their strategies.

Leikir Studio first set the game to release in 2022 for Nintendo Switch and PC. However, Dotemu later announced that Metal Slug Tactics was facing a delay, pushing the release to 2023 and then further to 2024. With its release around the corner, Metal Slug Tactics is poised to deliver an interesting new chapter in the Metal Slug saga, offering a fresh take on the popular classic run-and-gun action.
