The Spy x Family world was once devastated by a war between the countries Ostania and Westalia, and though ten years have passed since the official ending of this war, tensions still run high. The current scenario is reminiscent of the real-world Cold War, and as such, a new war could arise from even the smallest of conflicts.
Loid Forger is a Westalis Intelligence Agency spy, working hard to maintain the current peace after a diplomat’s suspicious death in Ostania put it at risk. Yor Forger is an assassin for the Garden, a group of contract killers that work hit jobs for Ostania’s National Unity Party, suspected to be behind the attack Loid is investigating. These two live together and raise a child together, both completely oblivious to each other’s secret identity.
Who is Loid Forger?
Loid Forger is one of the three main protagonists in Spy x Family. Known under the codename of Twilight, Loid is an extremely competent Westalis Secret Intelligence spy who works undercover in Ostania. He has genius-level intelligence and is both a combat specialist and a master in disguise, allowing him to single-handedly manage most situations and make extremely detailed plans that account for every possible variable. Though this is usually an advantage in his field, during Operation Strix this works against him as he often ends up frustrated and baffled at Anya Forger’s childish inability to follow directions and plans.
To guarantee Anya a placement at Eden Academy for Operation Strix, Loid Forger is forced into the role of both husband and parent. As opposed to more traditional spy activities, this task is way outside his comfort zone, and he is often confused about how to act with a child. Nonetheless, he adapts quickly, and his perfectionist nature leads him to overachieve and quickly become an above-average father. In fact, though he is very self-critical, many of the scenarios in which he chastises himself for not understanding Anya’s behavior are actually due to her being able to read minds, something he is not yet aware of.
Who is Yor Forger?
Yor Forger is the other adult protagonist in Spy x Family and, just like Loid, she lives a double life of her own. Known in her field as the Thorn princess, she is an assassin for Garden, an unofficial paramilitary organization that eliminates traitors under orders from Ostania’s Nationalist Party shadow government.
She is an extremely competent assassin with above-human strength and agility, however, when she is not assassinating, she is actually quite clumsy. In fact, she seems to be quite clueless when it comes to anything other than killing and physical prowess, leading her to embarrassing situations on multiple occasions. Socially awkward to a fault, she agrees to marry Loid in the current political regime as in Ostania, paranoia leads the government to view single women suspiciously and arrest them for being possible spies. In this context, Loid’s proposal comes as the perfect arrangement given that her incompetence and naivety, coupled with her assassination activities, make dating near impossible for her. Nonetheless, she is fiercely protective of Anya and seems to genuinely care about both her and Loid.
Are Yor And Loid Enemies?
Though on paper Yor Forger and Loid Forger should be sworn enemies due to the conflicts in the Spy x Family world, the situation is not that straightforward. Whilst Loid is definitely on the side of the Westalis forces, Yor’s alignment with Ostania is a little more flexible. As a contract killer under Garden, the Shopkeeper contracts her as an assassin to the Ostanian forces and though Garden is certainly somewhat aligned with the Nationalist Party, Yor appears to be more neutral. She seems to be more focused on the act of killing than the politics of it and her only known goal is to kill bad people, without necessarily identifying them as being part of one or the other side.
It is likely that towards the climax of Spy x Family, Loid Forger and Yor Forger will discover each other’s secrets. Though it is highly improbable that Loid will switch sides due to his extreme commitment to his cause, if he is able to show Yor that she would be acting for a force of good, he may be able to convince her to join the Westalis forces instead.
