Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t yet available for the general public, but with the first full screenings now behind them, the denizens of the Marvel Cinematic Universe fanbase can now rest easy in the knowledge that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman might indeed be the saviors that were foretold.

Deadpool & Wolverine was always going to hold the title of one of the most anticipated sequel films of the year, even before all the fanfare leading up to its trailers and previews. The third film in the highly successful Deadpool franchise and the one chosen to bring its titular character, Jackman’s returning Logan, and an ensemble cast of Marvel friends into the official MCU canon. Following the disastrous outings for the franchise in 2023 and the uncertainty of the future following Jonathan Majors’ exit from the franchise, Deadpool & Wolverine would take on an almost unbearably heavy burden, with the film’s own trailer harkening it as a messiah for the franchise that would be the character’s new home.

Deadpool & Wolverine Review: Marvel’s Novel But Familiar Blockbuster Is Exactly What The MCU Needed

Deadpool & Wolverine delivers a refreshing take on the familiar Marvel formula, even if it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

With Deadpool & Wolverine given the pedestal as the MCU’s only 2024 theatrical release, it’s been critical from the beginning that it lives up to all the hype and “saves” the franchise before the regular slate of MCU films resumes in 2025. The first set of full viewings has now come upon the world, and the film seems to have proven itself beyond any doubt, flooding X with glowing reviews and calls to action that are barely needed in the rabid climate surrounding the film. The exit polls from viewers all seem to agree that Reynolds, Jackman, and director Shawn Levy delivered the goods as promised, with user CineMundoUS asserting that the film is “-absolutely perfect, a masterfully crafted, action-packed spectacle that exceeds all expectations. It’s a return to form for Marvel, filled with surprises. The casting and performances are exceptional, delivering a truly mind-blowing experience!”

While the Deadpool & Wolverine preview reactions strongly indicated that Wade really is ‘Marvel Jesus’, even those enthusiastic reviewers were quick to point to the fact that they only got to see about half an hour of the film, leaving the question of how well things go from that point on up in the air until now. The outpouring of positive reviews and the renewed outlook on the future of the MCU has been infectious, and fans can’t wait to get at the film when it’s released for the general public. While the first few waves of reviews are out, Marvel has done a stellar job keeping the sanctity of the first-watch experience up for fans, a process being helped along by the reviewers themselves.

It’s little surprise that Shawn Levy and the two leading men were able to cook up a storm for this threequel when considering the combination of directorial talent and strong performances held up by natural on-screen chemistry with almost no limitation on what the film could do thanks to its MCU-sized budget, a massive roster of possible cameos, and the Deadpool franchise standard R-rating. While fans will have to wait to experience the full thing for themselves, it’s plain to see that the reports of Deadpool’s fourth-wall-breaking humor having gone stale were greatly exaggerated. The film brings this out in full force without doing too much damage to the aura bestowed on Jackman by his sendoff in Logan, all while balancing the much-discussed cameos with actual substance in the narrative. Coming off not too gritty and not too silly, the film is just right for the here and now.

All in all, it’s clear that the sort of comfortable novelty that Deadpool & Wolverine brings was just what the doctor ordered for the embattled franchise. While there’s little chance that this stellar entry will save the likes of Blade from suffering the consequences of its long-delayed releases or Agatha All Along being a widely dismissed spin-off, the influx of new characters (and more importantly, goodwill) from the success of Deadpool & Wolverine gives the MCU a fighting chance where their mainline projects are concerned going forward.

Deadpool & Wolverine is currently set for theatrical release on July 26, 2024.
