Mario & Luigi: Brothership has dozens of islands for you to explore and reconnect as you progress through the main story. While no one island is massive, there are a few collectibles and bonus things to do outside of the main story that can easily be missed on your first time around.

Even when on an island for the first time, you may want to backtrack to a nearby town to purchase new gear or simply just heal, and all of that is made much easier thanks to fast travel. The iconic pipes make their return in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, and here’s how they work.

Mario and Luigi: Brothership Needs to Put Gameplay First to Move the Series Forward

Mario & Luigi: Brothership marks the return of a beloved Nintendo franchise, but it also faces the challenge of revitalizing a series that has been dormant for nearly a decade. As the first new story in the series since the closure of its original developer, AlphaDream, Brothership carries the weight of rekindling the magic that made the previous Mario & Luigi games so cherished.

How To Fast Travel In Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Fast Traveling is done through green and blue pipes, with green pipes taking from one location to another within an island, and blue pipes leading to and from other islands. Blue pipes are found toward the beginning of where you spawn on an island and on Shipshape Island, and blue pipes can only take you to other starting areas of other islands. Green Pipes have set locations they lead to, which are usually just further into the island you’re already on. Green Pipes initially are in a block that needs to be jumped into in order to unlock that location as a fast travel point.

Having Mario jump on top of a green pipe and interacting with it will take you to the predetermined location on that island while interacting with a blue pipe will open up a map with all available islands you can travel back to.

There is no way to fast travel to another island from a green pipe or anywhere when deep into an island, meaning you’ll have to make your way back to the beginning of the island to leave, but Green Pipes make that trip easier. When you first travel to an Island, there is no way to fast travel off that island until it has been reconnected. While you will be able to discover green pipes within that island to fast travel, you will be stuck until you’re able to finish the story of that island.

Should You Return To Previous Islands In Mario & Luigi: Brothership

While you can try to complete all the content on an island on your first trip, more content will open up after you leave, giving even more reasons to double back whenever you can.

  • Search for Sprite Bulbs
  • Connecting an island opens up new pathways on the island to reach new locations.
  • Coming back with new tools lets you get past previous roadblocks.
  • Side quests almost always require backtracking to previous islands.

On top of those options, going back and leveling up before taking on a new island is always a good idea since you never want to get stuck on an island that is too difficult for your current level.
